Style/Fashion of Genre

Indie

In my opinion, In a way, there isn't a specific fashion style with indie. This is due to the fact that Being indie means that you are independent. What does independent mean? It means you do your own thing. It doesn't matter what current fashion trends are, were, or will be you just do whatever you feel like. However, in retrospect the style of 'indie' is growing and becoming a subculture which inevitably extinguishes the so called "independence". After research i realised that to truly dress indie you can wear realistically anything, as long as you like it because it suits you and is comfortableSociety's voice is so obnoxiously loud sometimes it's hard to determine if it's us making the decision or someone else telling us to make the decision. Although, there is still, as I said a "way" to dress indie because society's obnoxiously loud voice still creates the foundations for this up and coming genre, despite how the ones who are in it would like to admit. Indie tends to stray away from mainstream brands and prioritises comfortability over price. Meaning instead of wearing a £200 jacket, they may look for a jacket in a less expensive place that performs the exact same protection without the brand.

However, 'Indie kids' do acknowledge the fact that even though something is mainstream, it can still be very nice and it isn't bad just because it is mainstream. I found that indie tends to "bring back" clothes, because they believe that what you wear should be good and "good" can be an opinion from any time, whether its a pill box 60's hat, to a modern tee. They also tend to mix and match styles and trends with an "I don't care" attitude towards clothing that tends to layer up and either clash or don't clash. For footwear in particular, indie's tend to live by "if the shoe fits, wear it!"; there is a few specific stereotypes of indie footwear. For example, vans authentic's come in a variety of colours that an indie would use to show their own independence. Also Moccasins are an indie stereotype due to the fact that they tend to add a vintage and almost antique look to an outfit and wardrobe. Like the vans, they come in an assortment of colours and designs that allow for individuality and a personal touch to an outfit (Sounds like I am selling them).

Despite it all, indie's tend to make their own clothing as there is nothing that can be more personal and independent. From this, there is also a trend in merely tailoring old clothes or adding accessories such as buttons or other fabrics. Tie dying and crocheting etc. also are common trends to further develop clothing and outfits. By doing this, it is inevitably recycling clothing which ties in with another stereotype that indie kids be as eco-friendly with their fashion as possible, (not meaning that a leaf covering genitals is fashion but you understand the concept). Meaning that you will not see fur on an indie and you may find them in charity shops, whether it is donating clothing, or buying.
Overall, the fashion of an indie I believe will be effective in my music magazine as it will be a good partner with the design of my magazine and chosen model as they emphasise expression yet sometimes simplicity which I tend to make vital themes in my magazine.
